This book was released in two entirely different forms. The first hardback printing was actually only the first half of the story. The full text appered for the first time in America in the paperback edition. The hardback was first released in a limited edition with four variations:

1. Trade Hardcover
2. Collector's Edition (numbers 1 through 50)
3. Signature Edition (numbers 51 through 250)
4. Lettered Edition (24 copies marked A through Y)

They are identical except the trade hardcover was issued without the patterned leatherette slipcase which accompanied the various signed editions. The Signature Edition, the Collector's Edition and the Lettered Edition have a limitation page signed by both Dean Koontz and Phil Parks, the illustrator. The Collector's Edition was identical to the Signature Edition but included a special inscription by Koontz and an original drawing by Parks. The 24-copy Lettered Edition was divided between Koontz, Parks, and publisher Christopher Zavisa. This oversized hardback is rare and difficult to obtain, but ranks as one of the most beautiful books I have ever owned. It has several color foldout paintings, as well as pencil sketches from Phil Parks peppered throughout. The cost of the trade limited edition is high on the second-hand market but due to the low number of signed copies the price for the Signature Edition is expensive. The cost of the Collector's Edition is astronomical. The cost of the Lettered Edition seems to be slightly less than the Collector's Edition. The paperback edition contained all of the text of the earlier release, as well as an 80,000 word sequel to the original story. The paperback is still in print and is readily available, but the first edition of it has marginal value as a collectable.
