This is one of the rarest hardcovers published by Koontz under his own name.
The initial printing was only about 5000 copies, so first editions are
extremely tough to locate and the cost is often a great deal more than the
casual collector would be willing to pay. "Phantoms" was also the subject of a
plagiarism lawsuit that Koontz filed and won in 1992 against Zebra Publishing
and the 'authors' Dawn Pauline Dunn and Susan Hartzell. Their two books,
"Crawling Dark" and "Demonic Color" (published under the name Pauline Dunn)
appropriated plot points and, in some cases, whole passages from "Phantoms".
They were pulled from distribution and have become collectibles as well.
"Phantoms" was released as a movie in the fall of 1997, starring Joanna Going,
Rose MacGowan, Ben Affleck and Peter O'Toole and was scripted by Koontz himself.
You have a hardback first edition if there is a $15.95 price on the upper inside
front dustjacket and a "8303" date code on the lower inside front dustjacket,
and "ISBN 0-399-12655-4" in a white rectangle on the rear of the dustjacket.
